Horror audio is mostly two things: a riser that climbs, and a sting that detonates. This page collects the orchestral and noise risers people use for scares, plus the short stings that follow them. Every sound plays instantly in the browser and downloads as a free MP3, with no account required.
A riser climbs in pitch and volume and tells the viewer something is coming — the orchestral risers here do that with strings and brass, the noise risers do it with static and air. A sting is the hit at the end, usually under a second. Ambience is the third category: a room tone you leave running underneath. Scares need the first two; ambience is what stops the gaps between them sounding empty.
Start the riser, cut the picture on the rise, and land the sting on the cut. Most failed scares are a riser that runs too long — past about three seconds the audience works out what is happening and the sting stops landing.
These sounds are recorded hot on purpose, so they distort as soon as they sit under dialogue. Pull them down more than feels right, and leave the sting louder than the riser, since the hit is the part that has to cut through.
